This presentation will provide an overview of current issues regarding the transportation of crude products by rail. It will include a review of what we have learned from recent accidents, current regulations, material properties and how products are classified, adequacy of the rail car fleet, and overall safety of our railway networks. It is intended to provide an understanding of what the key transportation issues are and how they are being addressed to provider a safer transportation system.
Rick Lanyi, P. Eng.
Rick is the Rail Sector Lead at Stantec where he has corporate responsibility for development of the Freight Rail Business, which includes Master Services Agreements with Class 1 Railways, such as CN, CP, Norfolk Southern, and Kansas City Southern. Prior to joining Stantec, Rick worked for 8 years at CN as the Senior Manager of Engineering for Capacity Expansion in Western Canada, and as the Assistant Chief Engineer for Bridges and Structures. Rick graduated from the University of Waterloo in 1982 with a B.A.Sc. in Civil (Co-op) and is a fellow of the CSCE. Rick is currently leading an internal business initiative at Stantec called Energy on Rail, involving multiple business sectors including Transportation, Industrial Oil & Gas, Pipelines, Environmental Services and Project Development.
